N e o n e L e a t h e r J e s u sBM 1999
This site came about back in 2000 right after I returned from Burning man this was my second time to the event the first time being the year before in 1999. Driving into Blackrock city in 99 late in the evening the giant art lit by electricity and fire people wandering and dancing and yelling in all sorts of costumes El wire glowing on them the immense hodgepodge of tents trailers campers and home built domes and shade structures all lit an unlit and Mega volt on top of a large panel truck in a mesh suit and helmet catching and throwing bolts of lightening from the giant Van de graf generator on top the truck his voice booming out of a sound system proclaiming "I am the NEW GOD!!!".
I turned to the people in my car and said "Welcome to the trailer park of the apocalypse"
In 2000
I wanted to do something other than just observe and interact with the event I wanted a character that was art in an of itself. A local leather maker who caters to the local NY leather scene gifted me with a black suede leather Jesus Robes which had been produced and paid for by a theatrical production which then decided to go in another direction. The robes were taking up space and he decided that I was perfect for them, at that time EL wire had caught my fancy as something to experiment with and when I acquired the robe the idea of an EL wire crown of thorns emerged and thus was born NeonLeatherJesus.
At BM in 2000 the concept was your in the middle of this madhouse event of reality and hallucination and sureality brought on by the extreme environment and the living growing organism of black rock city. Suddenly you see this apparition in the desert a dark Jesus wearing a glowing neon crown of thorns, what do you do?
I had people drop to their knees hold my robes ad do their catechisms, I had people who wanted to talk people who wanted to be baptized (Remember the moto at BM is Piss clear) I was yelled at and told "We don't want your kind here" and many more intereacions intimate and unique.
